Smart card authentication provides strong two-factor authentication in macOS Sierra and later. macOS High Sierra 10.13.2 and later support smart card-only authentication for the mandatory use of a smart card, which disables all password-based authentication.

Using a smart card in macOS - Apple Support

The default method of smart card usage in macOS occurs automatically when a user inserts their card into a card reader attached to the computer. It prompts the user to "pair" the card with their account. This method is called "Local Account Pairing."

macOS Sierra and (legacy) smart card login - Blogger

Using a smartcard to login in macOS Sierra is easy to configure. But you have to take great care about the certificate chain between the CA and your certificate. I used and described the legacy smart card authentication system. macOS Sierra introduced a new "smart card token" mechanism to replace tokend. That is for another blog article.

Enable SSH - PIV Guides | PIV Usage Guides

Your PIV/CAC credential contains an authentication certificate key pair (public and private) for smart-card logon. Using a PIV/CAC key pair is very similar to using a self-signed key pair for SSH. Your Chief Information Security Officer must determine that security controls are in place and approve SSH scenarios.

Ludovic Rousseau's blog: macOS Sierra: Smart Card Driver ...

See "Mac OS X Lion and tokend"). tokend support may disappear in 2017 with 10.13. So that would be 6 years of deprecation. "limited to read-only mode" As with tokend the new token is also in read-only mode. Conclusion macOS Sierra will provide new technologies to play with. The smart card integration should be better.
